Improved CIP3 Digital Workflow

In the past few years, an important concept in the field of printing has gradually evolved from concept to reality. This idea is to unite and manage all aspects of printing. CIP3 (prepress, printing, and postpress) is the integration of prepress, printing, and postpress equipment to form an assembly line. It has taken a big step in the production of integrated printing.

Computer-integrated production (CIM) always reminds us of the huge number of impersonal robots in a huge factory. This is difficult to connect with the noisy printing industry. But it was CIP3 that brought us into the era of integrated production.

In fact, CIM is the development direction of the printing industry. In today's information society, integrated printing has become an unavoidable trend. The digital management system has penetrated into all aspects of the print production process, from scanner scanning pictures to cutting off the various parameters of the finished product. Therefore, it is not surprising that the integration of these systems has been made even higher. Because printing is also a production process that requires a large number of finished products.

The importance of CIP3

For many years, computers have played a very important role in the printing production process. Digital technology can integrate multiple devices and manage them. In other words, using the specific requirements of India, it will be converted to the parameters used in the next few steps. For example, the printer's ink zone controls, crease position on the folder, and so on.

Setting the parameters on each machine for optimization and unified management is the original intention of developing CIP3.

CIP3 was initially developed by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany and Heidelberg. The promotion of CIP3 in the printing industry is an important part of the company's success. A total of 34 companies, including equipment manufacturers, software developers and users, are currently working on research and development of CIP3.

The CIP3 technology is mainly to provide a file format so that customers can use the data required by India for printing in different printing processes. This file format is called Print Production Format (PPF). Most of the time it is called CIP3 PPF.

For a print job, PPF uses the various data generated by the prepress system to generate the processing information needed for the subsequent process for unified management. In other words, from the prepress system, all the data from India is taken and used to guide the processing of equipment in other processes. For example, ink zone controls and various binding parameters are generated on the press.

Researchers developed PPF and compared it to many digital workflows. The main feeling is that PPF is compatible with the current standard, the Postscript language. As a computer programming language, Postscript has infinite charm because of its strong ease of use and scalability.

In general, a CIP3 file structure is described by a set of Postscript language commands. For example, a CIP3 file has two parts before and after. The first half includes the content to be printed, register lines, color control information and cutting information.

There are many other printed information in these Postscript language commands. For example, the data used to calculate the ink area size, folding information. There are other parameters. This information includes not only the specific parameters of the print job, the time of generation, the software used, but also how long it took for India to live in design, RIP interpretation, imposition, and output.

PPF also has many parameters to manage the print job in each process. For example, low-resolution pictures are previewed on the screen, and replaced with high-resolution pictures at the time of output; the positions of the register lines are described; the color and ink control data, and the like. All this information is described in Postscript language and stored in many different ways. A CIP3 file can be transferred, exchanged, and controlled by various devices that can interpret the Postscript language.

RIP manages picture data and conversion curves, and uses them to calculate ink zone size, press preset parameters, and various parameters required for post-press processing equipment. Since this information is written in Postscript language, it can be easily printed on Postscript printers, and users will intuitively see the progress of Indo-Live in the entire process.

At the time of designing, it is important that Printworks generate a complete Postscript file in Postscript language software. In a larger factory, to print large quantities of prints, more management information is needed, requiring the system to have the ability to quickly generate management data.

In fact, like many software, CIP3 PFF can also be accessed in the MIS system.

In CIP PFF, it is also possible to store customer specific information such as customer name, website, contact information, etc. This prepares the customer's database.

Based on the RIP PPF is the core of the entire digital workflow, it manages the print and print information from the prepress version, ink size. It is like a universal data exchange format, data is exported to devices in other links. The equipment can select the processing parameters to be used as required.

Various data are processed in the RIP and transferred between the printer, the folder and the cutting machine with the CIP3 file. Then, the printer receives the ink setting information, and the folding machine and the cutting machine will also receive the required information. A complete CIP3 file includes various data used by Printworks after printing and printing.

Although PPF has been accepted by many printing and prepress equipment manufacturers, there is still a long way to go before it is used every day. There are many reasons for this. The most fundamental thing is to establish a complete set of digital workflows before applying PPF applications. Only those manufacturers who have significantly increased their productivity in the digital workflow can better understand the benefits of PPF. Although most manufacturers believe that the cost of introducing CIP3 is too high, they have to see that the digitalization of the entire printing industry has become a trend. The promotion and application of CIP3 technology is only a matter of time.

Application of CIP3

Referring to the current CIP3 application, the main printer user is Heidelberg. In the United Kingdom, 32 Heidelberg Speedmaster customers use CIP3 PFF. Most of these customers are commercial printing companies, and a small part are self-adhesive printers.

According to Heidelberg’s CIP3 UK sales manager, these customers have achieved 95% difficulty in copying colors after applying Heidelberg’s CIP3 and CPC32 press control systems; when printing, 50 copies of offset paper are used. Can be finished products.

The 32 users are pioneers of the Heidelberger CIP3. Most of them use Heidelberg's prepress processing system and Delta Rip. However, there are a few companies that use pre-press systems such as Agfa, Screen, Scitex and Harlequin Rip.

Manroland also has several CIP3 users. Pre-press manager Malcoln Frost said, "The printers sold recently include CIP3."

Most of these presses are linked to the prepress systems of companies such as Scitex, Agfa and Barco Graphic. Mr. Frost said, “The most striking aspect of the CIP3 is its ability to accurately reproduce colors and greatly reduce the time required for printing.”

“In the early 1990s, if the finished product was wrong, it was definitely in the printing process. But now it's different. If you make a small mistake before printing, the whole Indo-China will be messed up.” Speaking, it is best to have a commercial printing company that has a fully digital prepress system, and then introduce CIP3 PFF. The digital prepress experience of the manufacturers is the most important.

The CIP3 also has the advantage that users can feel at home. "The amount of overprint paper is quite small, and the desired color can be printed quickly."

If CIP3 can print finished products within 50 sheets, this will be very attractive to users. Especially those commercial printers who have many short editions and want to print quickly.

Although CIP3 has been proposed for several years, it is not as fast as the development of other technologies before printing. This cannot be attributed to the mistakes of PPF or its developers.

The indisputable fact is that there are still misunderstandings about its application. Many manufacturers purchase a large number of prepress and printing equipment. We also expect that CIP3's orders will also increase substantially. The important role that PPF plays in digital printing or when a print job is exported to multiple devices will be irreplaceable.

As a branch of MIS system, CIP3 PPF has now attracted the attention of many manufacturers.

With the increasing role of computer technology in the field of information dissemination, we are gradually pushing the traditional printing industry into the direction of integration. The color reproduction is good, the processing data is accurate, and the consumption of consumables is well controlled. These demands will only increase day by day, forcing the traditional printing industry to introduce new technologies in other fields in order to keep up with the trend of the times.

Using innovative technologies like CIP3 PPF, we will not be left behind
