When art, fashion and 3D printing are combined, it can always be both fascinating and confusing. At the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA), Simone Leonelli, who designed the W230 studio, walked through the subtle lines of hand-made and automated additive manufacturing to create a project for the exhibition “Blurred Boundariesâ€.
The exhibition is part of the Telstra Perth Fashion Festival cultural show, which shows the future of fashion.
The theme of the exhibition itself may hint at the chaos of the design and technology world, but for Leonelli, the two are perfectly combined. “Incremental manufacturing is a technology, and its use can be part of the art process. Like pencils and watercolors, art is made by artists, using tools, not the tools themselves.
Without these specific tools, the complex necklaces, dresses and shoes shown in this exhibition are impossible. “It is impossible to produce non-standard objects by traditional manufacturing methods. Complexity cannot be achieved by injection molding or even milling.†Although these tools can be hand-crafted, the efficiency and quality of the design compromises the designer.
In fact, the exhibition aims to demonstrate the potential of the “flexible and scalable technology†described by Leonelli. Most of the exhibits are made from desktop FDM 3D printers and PLA materials. He said: "I am more willing to use bio and 100% recyclable plastic whenever possible."
So far, the projects of the Blurred Boundaries are very interesting. Can they wear them? Leonelli replied: "Some works may be worn out, while others are purely challenging concepts."
